My
name is James Mack, better known to the music world as J.Mack.
I began making beats at the age of 18 during my senior year in
high school. At first, I was just making tracks for my rap group
“Street Gang.” I was rapping with them so of course these beats
were all free but I would just come home from school and go hard
on the Fruity Loops for two and three hours at a time. Every weekend
my group would come over and we’d cycle through maybe 20 plus
brand new tracks and pick the best one. I decided to take all
the other tracks my group didn’t use and burn them to disc. I
remember just burning disc after disc and taking them to different
places giving them away and leaving stacks of discs in the malls.
Shortly
after that I remember a guy from my neighborhood called me and
asked how much my tracks were and I said $20 a track. I remember
going through over 100 beats with him that day and he left with
6 beats and I had 60 BUCKS!!! It sounds funny now but at the time,
$60 for six beats I made all in the same day probably sounded
more like a new pair of “Adidas Shell Toes” to me. I remember
thinking to myself “wow, I can’t believe people will really spend
money on something that comes so easy to me!” That was the point
beat-making transformed from just something I could do, into a
special gift from God. Sure I let that guy talk my price down
but he also helped me price my tracks better by spreading the
word about me and constantly praising my work which all triggered
my understanding of supply and demand. From there I decided I
could get $50 per track and every time I stepped my game up I
would add a couple bucks to the price. I was making $100 per track
my first year of college and more than that during my sophomore
year. The money was a true blessing from God because, college
was expensive and days that I would’ve went hungry, I had a little
change in my pocket from someone purchasing a beat earlier in
the week. That same year is when I took my hustle to the internet.
I made my first few sales through soundclick I believe but the
first dedicated production site I registered at was rocbattle.com
and it was far from the last. I have now SOLD OVER 600 BEATS ONLINE
and started MY OWN PRODUCTION WEBSITE!!! Thanks to those first
few dollars, I was motivated to keep on working and perfecting
my craft.
